Sustainable chocolate – together for a better future
MORE SUPPORT FOR COCOA FARMERS
The way chocolate is harvested, traded, produced and sold is important to us. Cocoa is traditionally produced in third world countries. Unfortunately, working conditions are often disastrous, child labour and exploitation are the order of the day. We certainly do not want to reduce our chocolate costs at the expense of the suffering population of the poorest countries in the world. For us, quality means not only good taste, but also good working conditions for everyone involved in production. That is why we have joined the CACAO-TRACE programme for the purchase of cocoa.
Cacao-Trace is an initiative that focuses on a sustainable cocoa supply chain and the production of sustainable chocolate of exceptional quality. This creates value for everyone from cocoa farmers to consumers. The sustainable chocolate is made from beans of the highest quality, which are fermented and dried according to strict guidelines. In centers, close to the cocoa farmers, experts control and improve the fermentation process. This guarantees a constant first-class taste for all chocolate lovers and at the same time a higher income for the cocoa farmers.
The cocoa farmers receive training and a premium price. The Chocolate Bonus returns the value of premium chocolate: 10 cents per kilo of chocolate sold is refunded directly to the cocoa farmers.
CACAO TRACE: OUR CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY
Cacao-Trace is the only sustainable cocoa sourcing program that redefines the standard for sustainable chocolate, with an emphasis on first-class taste and greater value for all parties involved.
With this excellent strategy, we are creating a truly sustainable future. The traditional way of working in chocolate production leaves a lot to be desired in terms of sustainability. Far too little is paid for cacao. This forces some cocoa farmers to stop growing cocoa, switch their plantations or even stop farming altogether.
In recent years, chocolate manufacturers have increasingly focused on helping farmers produce more cocoa. However, this has led to even lower prices. Cacao-Trace is a sustainable cocoa sourcing program that redefines the standard for chocolate, with an emphasis on a first-class taste and greater value for all parties involved.
An extra bonus for cocoa farmers for sustainable chocolate
The farmers are trained and supported to deliver cocoa beans of the highest quality.
Together we reward the farmers with a so-called sustainability bonus for the premium quality of the cocoa beans. The Cacao Trace program guarantees a premium price and the unique chocolate bonus of 10 cents per kilo of chocolate sold. For some countries, this means an extra income of 3 to 4 monthly salaries. 100% of this chocolate bonus is paid out to the farmers.
